The weekend, 1st Anniversary and Cole vs. the ER

So I still haven't put any Arkansas pics up, I'm sorry, I will try to do that tonight. Sleep continues to be just beyond my reach. :-( Ryan's first couple days of school went well and he likes it alot. When he went back today, he started to tear up, but his teacher came up and gave him a big hug and started telling him what they were going to do that day, so while she was doing that, I slipped out. They did music and pe today, so he was happy! Since Thursday, Cole was not doing well. I couldn't figure out what it was. He wasn't eating well and when he did eat, he'd throw most of it up. He wasn't sleeping at all, so therefore, I wasn't sleeping at all. Gas drops didn't help, tylenol didn't help, the warm bath only helped while he was in it. The worst part of all was the screaming. It was horrible. He would be fine for about 20 mins after he woke up and then he would just start crying and screaming. He'd curl up his body and then stretch out long and he'd basically do this until he was so exhausted that he would basically just pass out. It was so sad and I'm sure our neighbors thought I was abusing him. :-( Finally on Saturday evening it hadn't gotten any better, so after talking to mom, I took him to the er. (No urgent care here in our town) So I got there about 9:30pm and they got us in pretty quickly. They checked him all out, no fever, good vitals. So they put us in a room to wait for the dr. After a little bit Dr. Dan came in and asked what was going on. I told him and he said that it could be telescoping bowels. He said he was going to put in for xrays and wanted to observe him during one of his crying fits. So just before the xrays, Cole started screaming again, the nurse came in and took us to the xrays, he calmed down a little while we did that, then we went back to our room to wait some more. So Dr. Dan came back in and Cole was screaming again, so he had me lay him down on the bed. He checked out his tummy and his movements and then said he was going to look at the xrays. When he came back he said the xrays didn't show much, and that the only way to fix telescoping bowels is an air enema (yeah, I can only imagine it's even less fun than it sounds) and that to do that, they had to have a pediatric surgeon on hand incase he gets a tear in his bowels. Well here, they didn't have one. So we'd have to go down to Dornbecker. He said he was going to call and talk to one of the dr's down there and see what they said. So he came back and said that they would all rather be safe than sorry and that they wanted to send him down to Dornbecker. For some reason Dr. Dan wanted us to go by ambulance, so I had to call Josh and have him wake up Ryan and since we don't know anyone here that we can call at midnight to bring Josh and Ryan to the hospital, Ryan got his first cab ride. So as I was waiting for them to get their, they told Dr. Dan that he needed to do a blood work up on Cole and in lieu of having to stick him twice, they put in an iv just in case he might need one. It was so horrible, I cried and cried. Of course Cole was just hysterical. As soon as they were done, I held him and rocked him and he finally fell asleep. He slept until the emts got there to take us down to Portland. They got his carseat all strapped to the gurney and got us in the ambulance. Josh and Ryan followed in the car and Tommy was wonderful and met Josh to pick up Ryan so he could sleep at their house. While we were in the ambulance, Cole held on to my finger until he fell asleep. We got the Dornbecker and they got us in a room, we re-explained what was going on and they ordered an ultrasound. Cole had one of his screaming fits again and I got him calmed down and he fell asleep. I honestly think he shut down because he slept through the whole ultrasound. After that, Josh slept on a chair and I laid down on the bed next to Cole. I dozed off and so did he, then he woke up and nursed a little and we both went back to sleep. Then the dr's came in and said they didn't see anything on the ultrasound and that it was 95-96% accurate. They said the only way to be 100% was to do the air enema and that the risks from that were greater than the chance that the ultrasound is wrong, so they opted against it. They said their guess was that he had some kind of virus that he just needed to get out of his system. They told us to keep a close eye on him and if it continued to take him right back to the er. So we left and headed to Tommy's and slept for a few hours until Ryan woke up and then headed home. We got home about 11:30am on Sunday and slept as much as we could. Cole was doing better, actually smiling and only had one or two screaming fits.
On Monday, our 1st anniversary, we got up and got ready for the day. Josh took Ryan to the park to wear him out while Cole took a nap and I cleaned a little. When Ryan got home he ate lunch and then he and Josh cleaned his room. Cole was doing better still and was okay being put down while we were doing stuff. We fed Ryan and put the boys to bed early after withholding a nap from Ryan so that he would sleep well. It took him all of five mins to fall asleep. :-) Josh grilled us a couple of steaks that were delicious and we had a nice, quiet dinner at home. Cole stayed asleep long enough for us to eat and then we decided to watch a movie. Cole's sleeping still isn't totally normal. He's still a little fitfull when he sleeps and wakes up easily, but it's getting better. He's definitely eating SO much better and is happier. So that was our fun weekend! :-) I promise, PROMISE that my next post will be with pictures from Arkansas. :-)

Paula,
My heart was breaking as I read this. I remember all too well the iv they tried to put into Delaney. It took hours. Literally. HOURS. It was horrible. I am so glad Cole is ok. Keep him healthy, poor little man.
Happy Anniversary my friend. I remember a year ago seeing you walking down that aisle with your mom's dress on and hearing her gasp. What a memory!
Love you.

Happy Anniversary, too. It doesnt seem like it could be a year already. Time sure does fly!

Sad, sad, I hate feeling helpless. I'm glad he's doing better.

both jacey adn lucas went to the er as babies, lucas with congestion that kept him from breathing very well and jacey at 4 months with rotavirus. to tell you the truth it sounded kind of extreme to have ultrasounds and xrays to come to the conclusion that he probably had a virus. maybe my doctors were not very thorough and yours were cautious. either way I feel for you, seeing your baby in that kind of pain and discomfort is heart wrenching. i'm sorry. poor boy. babies being that sick is sooo scary. i'm sure the doctors like to error on the side of caution and do all that's available to try to fix those little guys. your arkansas trip looked like fun. love to the fam.
